Once again, Moroccan strawberry workers in the Spanish fields are subjected to exploitation, harassment and sexual assault by farm owners while they are working on farms.

According to what La Mar de Onuba revealed, three Moroccan workers from Las Posadillas farm in the province of Huelva filed a complaint with the Spanish judiciary because of their exploitation and harassment in a case that recalls the facts of last year.

The three workers complain of systematic exploitation by farm owners:

Heavy working hours without taking into account the high temperature

They also complain that they do not respect the half-hour rest that they are given at lunchtime.

Where operators prohibited fasting half an hour of rest, claiming that they are given to those who break their fast.

This is a clear compulsion to forcible Ramadan Iftar, which constitutes a violation of human rights and freedom of belief.

The workers also complained about not receiving their salaries, withdrawing their passport and forcing them to work for additional hours

The total daily working hours are 12 hours, from sunrise to sunset.

This is also in breach of the terms of the agreement to work for 6 and a half hours per day only.

In a video tape interview conducted by La Mar de Onuba for Irispress, the complainants were told that they were deprived of half an hour of food on the pretext that in Ramadan there was no food.

She also told the complainants that long work at a high temperature forced some workers to drink water, and accordingly broke their fast during Ramadan due to the difficulty in working.

Moroccan strawberry workers are subjected to sexual harassment and exploitation again:
The complainants confirmed during their interview with Irispress magazine that the workers live in very narrow places, gathering 18 people in one house shared with the men.

The workers also complained about the absence of hygiene conditions, which led to the injury of one of them (a complainant) with an ice rash that requires immediate treatment.

In addition, the workers complained about the lack of hot water suitable for bathing, which makes them compelled to shower in cold water.

The complainants revealed that they suffer from the absence of transportation to facilitate the transfer from the fields to the urban center or medical assistance centers.

The biggest and most serious problem is that workers are subjected to harassment and forced prostitution, and described them as "Moroccan whores".

What are the legal measures taken to protect Moroccan workers?
The Spanish Federation of Industry CCOO, in a statement dated in Madrid, called for immediate and resolute action to investigate unacceptable abuses

So to put an end to this scourge that the Federation has repeatedly denounced in the province of Holifa, La Mar de Onuba newspaper reported on May 22, 2019.

The union called for the implementation of protocols to combat sexual harassment and for respecting the rights of all workers.

The Inspectorate of Labor and Social Security also called for verification of the working conditions of all persons.

The Spanish judiciary decided to reopen the investigation into allegations of sexual abuse after receiving a complaint from Moroccan workers who were subjected to sexual harassment and exploitation in “Huelva” during the year 2019
